"Meeting Type" Legend

Alcoholics Anonymous groups offer various types of meetings, depending on their needs and interests. The schedules presented attempt to document the type of meetings a group offers, so that you can find the one that best meets your needs.

 

Type

Definition

C / Closed

Closed meeting: Attendance is limited to alcoholics, and people who have a desire to stop drinking

O / Open

Open meeting: Any person interested in AA is welcome, including the general public

Disc / Discussion

Discussion: Meeting is a discussion format on a topic selected by the chair or group

Lit

 Literature: Meeting is centered on a reading selection from AA literature

M

 Men: Meeting for men

W

Women: Meeting for women

Non-Smoking / NS

Smoking is not permitted in the meeting room or building. 
  • When the symbol appears next to a particular meeting, that meeting is non-smoking.
  • When it appears next to a meeting time, all meetings at that time are non-smoking.
  • If all meetings at a group are non-smoking, it is indicated at the bottom of the group's schedule.

Note that the owner of a group’s meeting space, not the group itself, may determine a smoking policy.

Spkr / Speaker

 

Speaker: Meeting is centered on one recovering alcoholic telling the story of his or her recovery in A.A. In some parts of the country, this is called a pitch meeting.

Step Study / Step

Step Study:  Meeting is centered on the study of one or more of the Twelve Steps

 Lit / Study

 Literature: Meeting is centered on a reading selection from A.A.'s literature.

Step Spkr

Step Speaker:  Meeting is centered on one recovering alcoholic sharing his or her experience of the Twelve Steps.

Big Book / BB

Big Book Study: Meeting is centered on a reading selection from the "Big Book," Alcoholics Anonymous.

Twelve and Twelve: Meeting is centered on a reading selection from the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.

As Bill Sees It /ABSI

As Bill Sees It: Meeting is centered on a reading selection from the book As Bill Sees It.

Grapevine

Grapevine: Meeting is centered on a reading selection from A.A.'s "meeting in print," the Grapevine.

Traditions / Trad

Traditions: Meeting is centered on discussion of the meaning and usefulness of one or more of A.A.'s Twelve Traditions.

Newcomers / Beginners

Newcomer's: Meeting is centered on discussion of topics of greatest interest to the newcomer to Alcoholics Anonymous, who might be new to sobriety.

YP

Young People: Meeting is centered on discussion of topics of greatest interest to younger members of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Birthday Meeting

Birthday Meeting: Meeting is centered on the recognition and celebration of various lengths of sobriety of group members.

Group Conscience / GC / BM

Group Conscience or Business Meeting: A business-oriented meeting where issues involving group policy, expenditure, schedule, and activities are discussed and decided upon.
